Nephrology application data for the 2021 Match show total candidates and applications at 5-year highs
ASN Data Brief—Nephrology Candidates and Applications at 5-Year Highs
Nephrology application numbers from the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) data through September show nephrology candidates (▲18% YOY) and applications (▲49% YOY) continue to trend above previous years. Cumulative candidate totals (449) are the highest since the AY 2016 application cycle. Foreign and U.S. allopathic medical graduate candidates are up 23% and 20%, respectively, while DOs have declined slightly.
For context, ERAS no longer separates U.S. IMGs (graduates of Caribbean and other medical schools) from foreign medical graduates in their IMG totals (prior to this change nephrology experienced an increase in U.S. IMGs candidates and decrease in foreign medical graduate candidates). Also, nephrology candidates have historically had higher numbers of subspecialty cross-registrations. A final ERAS update will be provided in November.
